DETECTING THE EASTERN GOLDFIELDS.
WESTERN AUSTRALIA
A week can be a long time when it comes to prospecting. For example, on any given day, results from Laverton to Kurnalpi to Salmon Gums can be like chalk and cheese.
Last week, most operators were rained off for a few days or chased by flies to Esperance. But the week prior it was beautiful weather with lots of groups out from a full day to a full week, with some reporting decent finds up to 2oz. However, small nuggets dominated finds, with those in the 1gm or less category.
But that is prospecting, is it not? I recall a time in the Kalgoorlie region when a friend and I detected from sunrise to sunset, then used head-torches for most of the night also, as we found so many nuggets. Others, that had been over the same ground before us, hadn’t even got a target, even with later model detectors.
On other occasions, the shoe has been on the other foot, and I couldn’t find a horseshoe let alone a glint of gold.
So, keep that in mind when prospecting in WA. It can run hot and cold, but one thing is certain. If you are not out detecting, you will not find nuggets. Also, ensure your equipment is working properly and of the best standard you can organize, and most importantly, stay safe.
